By Matthew Watkins The Texas Tribune Originally published May 4, 2015 In the latest bit of infighting among the governing board of the University of Texas System, the Board of Regents on Monday asked the state attorney general to ignore one of its member's request for help accessing confidential student information. The board approved a letter saying the regent, Wallace Hall, doesn't have a right to "unfettered" information from the system. The letter also says that Hall doesn't have a right to ask Attorney General Ken Paxton to weigh in on the issue. The regents voted 8-0 to send the letter [...]

By Matthew Watkins The Texas Tribune Originally published April 20, 2015 When he abstained from voting to appoint Gregory Fenves as the new president of the University of Texas at Austin on Monday, UT System Regent Wallace Hall said he still had some "lingering, unresolved questions" about the admissions process at the flagship school. Hours later, Hall's lawyer requested help from the state attorney general to find some answers. In a letter to Attorney General Ken Paxton, Hall's lawyer says Hall wants access to supporting documents and evidence that was used to compile a consultant's report about the admissions policies at [...]

By Reeve Hamilton The Texas Tribune Originally published June 3, 2014 In a five-page letter sent Monday to all Texas House members, state Rep. David Simpson, R-Longview, expressed concerns with the legislative committee investigating University of Texas System Regent Wallace Hall, warning his colleagues that they shouldn’t settle for what he called “tame transparency.” The House Select Committee on Transparency in State Agency Operations, which launched its investigation of Hall nearly a year ago, recently voted that grounds to impeach the regent exist. Hall has been accused of abusing his office in the course of personally conducting investigations of the University of [...]

Analysis: Hall saga begins with closed meeting, could end with a stage, spotlight

2014-05-16T14:36:05-05:00

By Ross Ramsey The Texas Tribune Originally published May 16, 2014 This episode of the Wallace Hall saga begins with state lawmakers holding a transparency meeting in private. Some groups objecting to that opacity are financed by donors they will not reveal, some of whom aim, as Hall does, to change the way things are done in higher education in Texas. And it could very well end with a stage, a spotlight and an audience for a government appointee who has been trying to bring attention to the practices of the state’s most prestigious public university. Hall, appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to [...]
